Acne Tragedy

Finding the best acne treatment is truly a pain. For all of them actually promises give good effects if not immediate results. However, researchers claim that a lot among the long list of acne solutions today are not thoroughly checked. This means that somehow, if you are not the type who probes first before purchasing, can easily get ripped off or worse – you can end up in a sad tragedy like this:

Boy dies after taking acne tablets

Shaun Jones from Pontypridd, South Wales died 12 hours after taking tablets for acne. The 14 year old who’d been to see his doctor about spots on his back and shoulders was given a prescription for a drug, but was given different tablets as the ones prescribed were out of stock. The coroner who looked into Shaun’s death said he died as a result of medical complications and that the case was “beyond” one in a million. She said his reaction seemed to be “random and pretty much unique.” It’s thought to be the only ever case of a fatal reaction to the tablet. Dr Stuart Flanagan told Revealed that anyone taking drugs for acne shouldn’t worry and to see their own doctor if they had any concerns. He suggests every time you start a new prescription for any drug to read through the information leaflet that comes in the packaging. Watch the exclusive video here…

Another similar tragedy to this is the claims of a young woman for getting prescribed with the wrong acne treatment last August 2012:

Young Woman Claims Bactrim Was Improperly Prescribed for Acne Treatment

The patient / plaintiff was a 45-year-old male with a history of traumatic brain injury, limited use of his extremities and contractures of his left elbow and shoulder. He had been receiving aquatic therapy twice a week for over six months to increase his range of motion and improve his ability to perform activities of daily living and was noted to have greatly improved. During his therapy the defendant physical therapist would typically work with him individually in the pool and then permit him to walk on his own along the pool wall holding the handrail. In the latter case, the negligence is in the attending medical practitioner. However, the detrimental fact remains that when any acne product or treatment is wrongly used, tragic incidents may occur.

Drugs.com listed the commonly reported adverse reactions encountered by acne treatment users. Know them by heart so you can know what side effects you may need to be wary of:

Thyme for Acne Treatment?

A new acne remedy has been recently developed out of the spicy thyme herbs that we often see in the kitchen. Since it contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, researchers made use of thyme to formulate a new acne treatment that will have similar effects as the common benzoyl peroxide:

Early days for ‘thyme acne treatment’

“Beating acne may be a matter of thyme,” quipped the Daily Mail, adding that an extract of the herb could be more effective than benzoyl peroxide – a chemical found in many anti-acne creams and washes.

These claims are based on laboratory research that tested how well a range of plant extracts can kill the bacteria that cause acne. Most notably, researchers found that an alcohol-based thyme extract could kill the bacteria that caused acne in the laboratory, and at specific concentrations was more effective than benzoyl peroxide. The research has not yet been published but was presented at a conference, which means that few details of its methods and results are available yet. Therefore, the claims should be treated with some caution until they are checked out by experts, which will happen when the research papers are submitted to the full publication process. Indeed, this is good news especially for individuals who wish to have another alternative acne treatment. But then, is thyme truly a good remedy for acne? Listen to Dr. Schultz of DermTV.com as he answers this question thoroughly:

Does Thyme Treat Acne?

Should you believe the headline, “Thyme Kills Acne Bacteria”? Is thyme the answer to our acne issues? In this episode of DermTV, Dr. Schultz discusses recent research into the affects of thyme on acne. View the YouTube video here…

Acne is nothing new to many of us and I know how much painstaking it is. So I know how desirably people want to find out effective solutions on how to get rid of acne. There are lots of quality acne treatments out there that you may not know about. So I have shared some innovative treatment ideas that were found effective for most people.

Innovative laser and light treatments to tackle acne,

Speaking today at ACADEMY ’05, the American Academy of Dermatology’s summer scientific meeting, dermatologist Arielle N.B. Kauvar, M.D., clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine in New York City, discussed how innovative laser and light treatments, used alone or in combination with light-activated skin medications, are advancing dermatologists’ ability to treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, rosacea and sun damage.

“In the past, treatments for some skin conditions could be quite involved, leaving the patient with visible side effects and a long recovery time,” said Dr. Kauvar. “With today’s laser and light treatments, dermatologists can safely and effectively remove the visible signs of a variety of skin conditions with faster results and a shorter recovery time for the patient.”

The surprising fact is that more than 80% of Americans are affected by acne and teenagers are the worst sufferers. I have also found another innovative treatment idea that you may want to check out which is known as Dermabrason.

Know What Dermabrason is and The Risks Involved With It

Dermabrasion is a technique that uses a wire brush or a diamond wheel with rough edges (called a burr or fraise) to remove the upper layers of the skin. The brush or burr rotates rapidly, taking off and leveling (abrading or planing) the top layers of the skin. This process injures or wounds the skin and causes it to bleed. As the wound heals, new skin grows to replace the damaged skin that was removed during dermabrasion.

Risks

Common temporary side effects of dermabrasion include:

  • Scarring.
  • Redness. This usually fades within 6 to 12 weeks.
  • Swelling.
  • Flare-ups of acne or tiny cysts (milia). These can often be treated successfully with tretinoin. Antibiotics are sometimes needed.
